Reasons why non-profits and the millennial generation are a perfect match.

By Ramon Garcia
Finding sustainability in the non-profit sector is difficult.  Generating public engagement is a priority, however our world is changing very fast, and the issues that a non-profit has to deal with are usually budget cuts, tough political environments, and scarcity in revenue streams.  This picture reveals a small barrier to carry on the mission of the non-profit, but where there is a millennial and a bit of imagination, there is hope.
Born between 1979 and 1995, these people are the largest generation ever to inhabit out planet. Millenials are social and like to socialize while they make decisions about how to spend their money, time, and energy.  They like to hang out with their parents and constantly ask for feedback on impornant matters of life. This characteristic is a gateway into the interests of millennials, making their parents a desirable supporter as well. They like things simple, and simple means technology.  They like is working, and they like it mobile. An interesting aspect about millenials is that once they become loyal to a cause, they follow it and support it fully. They are noble and have a strong sense of values; according to Forbes.com, 50% of them prefer to shop at places that openly support causes they care about. Another thing worth mentioning is that they like to live an experience, so if you can engage them in your mission in a profound way, they become your best friend
Because of these reasons, the millennial generation, helps spread the word and push your message to places you would not even think you could reach.  As a non-profit organization that is trying to change the world, you would have an advantage if you engage this generation in your mission. How to do it you ask? They are always looking for excitement and experiences, so keep them feeling that they are part of the solution. Talk to them, let them talk too, and more importantly do it through technology.  Step out and  go recruit some of those millenials (and their parents) in your mission to save the world. They will be with you all the way if you make it easy, exciting and a great adventure for them.

  1. The younger generations are a new species in some ways to me and marketing to them takes a new approach in the work that I do professionally. :)
